Are you considering undergoing breast augmentation using breast implants? Do you know the types of breast implants and which would fit your preference? There are so many types of breast implants available on the market nowadays, some more preferred than the others. Let us briefly discuss the different types of breast implants so we could help you decide which breast implant type would suit you best.

Types of breast implants

We have listed down the characteristics of the different types of breast implants based on the filler material, texture, shape, and size. It is important to inform your plastic surgeon about your realistic expectations about the results of your breast augmentation procedure so you both can decide which of the types of breast implants would fit your needs.

Filler material: Saline or Silicone

All types of breast implants have a sturdy shell with a filler material. Saline breast implants contain sterile salt water and are deflated upon insertion during the breast augmentation procedure. Once it is positioned correctly, it can be inflated or filled with the salt water solution. They are said to be safer to use because if they get ruptured during the course of its use, the solution inside the implant can be safely absorbed by the body.

Silicone breast implants, on the other hand, is a type of breast implant that contains silicone gel. They are already filled when inserted into the breast area, so the ideal breast size should already be decided before the procedure. Because the filling material is viscous enough to replicate the feel of a natural breast, silicone breast implants are more preferred by most cosmetic surgery clients nowadays.

Case texture: Smooth or Rough

Smooth breast implants, mostly filled with saline than silicone material, are surgically placed in a larger breast pocket so that it could slide easily to mimic the feeling of softer natural breasts. Textured, also called rough, are mostly silicone gel-filled breast implants that are snugly positioned in the chest. The natural scarring inside the chest would hold the implant better and make the breast implant less wiggly than that of a saline breast implant. This type of breast implant is also found to reduce the risk of capsular contracture.

Shape: Round or Anatomical

These types of breast implants all aim to reach the same goal – to enhance and improve breast size and shape without looking fake. Using round-shaped breast implants is beneficial for clients who wanted to have emphasized upper breast volume. This would give them better-looking breast cleavage. This type of breast implant can be inserted in all incision types during breast augmentation. Additionally, displacing or rotation of round breast implants after surgery will not greatly affect the shape and look of the breasts.

Anatomical implants, more commonly known as teardrop implants, are a type of breast implant that subtly enhances the breasts, having a fuller lower base that gradually tapers upward. This shape creates a more natural look at the fullness of the breasts. Because the teardrop breast implants are already inflated upon usage, this type of breast implant can only be inserted through the inframammary route or the incision under the breast. Also, correct positioning of this type of breast implant is very important because of its distinct shape; one wrong move and the shape of the breasts gets compromised.

The size of the breast implants should also be determined by you and your surgeon before the breast augmentation procedure. Keep in mind that while your goal is to increase the size and enhance the shape and look of your breasts, they still have to be well-proportioned to your body so as not to pose untoward health risks in the future. Talk to your expert plastic surgeon to know the correct and appropriate size that would fit your body build.

Because medical and surgical advancements are happening almost every day with regard to breast enhancement, there are now so many types of breast implants to choose from when undergoing breast augmentation. It is wise to have realistic expectations about how your breasts would look and feel after using any type of breast implants. But what is most important is that this cosmetic procedure should also be used to improve your positive outlook in life, your self-esteem, and your confidence.
